I saw this on the History Channel. I did not know of the 9/11 floatilla used to evacuate almost 500,000 people from Manhattan. Desperate to leave the area, the Coast Guard sent out an all hands on deck - if you had a boat and could drive it, stear it, whatever, even if you were not certified, you were asked to go to the docks and get as many people as possible to the other side, whatever side that was. People were totally coated with ash, hosed down. As you can imagine, totally frightened. A remarkable evacuation.
