Summertime on its way, soon June will be busting out all over

Enjoy the photos, you should be able to click on to open them up and even pinch open further.

Since I shut down my website, several of you have asked how you can see my art in one place. Well, I have just the answer: through Art St Louis you can use ArtLoupe; the link is below
artloupe.org

Now the (kind of ) bad news...You need to view it through their app on your mobile device, won't work on your laptop, desktop, or tablet. The benefit is that you can click on  "artist" and input Lyles and see all of my active pieces, a price, and an easy way to order. For me it is palatable that they only charge 10% commission. If you select a piece to purchase ArtLoupe will notify me, create a mailing label for me and all I have to do is package it up and mail it. It will add a S&H cost to you, usually approximatelyely $15 dollars. You can charge it or use your Pay Pal account.

I hope you enjoy the updates to my art and life as presented in this blog. IF you don't like the political stuff and don't want to receive future blogs just say so, no hard feelings. So far, only two have taken me up on the offer. With that in mind, remember:

Below the Fold below is where lies controversial stuff, if you don't want to go there, stay above.
And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, I present:

New Art:

8 x 10" oil on canvas board, Garden of The Gods, Colorado Springs CO.
I'll try something new here: Like it? It would look great on your wall. I will include the frame and Shipping and Handling, all for $199.00. IF you don't like the frame, I'll sell it for $159.00. Let me know.

Old Art:
But new location...on their way to Wynbrier Gallery in Estes Park CO. So far, they have sold two of my pieces. Stop in when you are in the neighborhood: This is their web link

two views of Hwy 36 entering Estes

Other Art:
Fascinating, short YouTube video on the analysis and restoration of Van Gogh's three Bedroom paintings  This link will take you there, there might be a short ad before the main video.I did not know there were three very similar but different versions of one of his best loved paintings.

I'm Thinking about:
Mary, you delighted as your son, Jesus, healed the sick. Intercede for our sick that they may receive good health and that they, in turn, may be healers to others. I forget, these were/are real people and that Mary was there to witness His healing acts. How fortunate. How gratifying. A mother and her son. He was inside her at one time. An Amazing bond.

Listening to: Both sides now - not Judy Collins...
A Side:
I have referred to London Grammar in prior blogs. Their song Strong seems to resonate more than ever,     The link to YouTube Strong    there will be an ad you can skip over. And, the sound icon might be on off, so turn it on - Headphones are superb. As one online comment stetted "I can't believe (this sound) is live". For me, I almost need a Kleenex. Its powerful. This is a short version, if you want the whole song, the next up on the YouTube feed is Full Performance (Live on KEXP) so open that up, it will start with their Hey Now (not The Moody Blues version). Same thing, the DJ in the studio can't believe it is a live sound. They have a few minute chat, interesting that she mentions Jeff Buckley. They finish with Interlude. Moreover, if you want I can send you my iTunes copy I purchased, just let me know.
Excuse me for a while
While I'm wide-eyed and I'm so down caught in the middle
I've excused you for a while
While I'm wide-eyed and I'm so down caught in the middle
And a lion, a lion
Roars would you not listen?
If a child, a child
Cries would you not give them?
Yeah, I might seem so strong
Yeah, I might speak so long
I've never been so wrong
Yeah, I might seem so strong
Yeah, I might speak so long
I've never been so wrong
Excuse me for a while
Turn a blind eye with a stare caught right in the middle
Have you wondered for a while
I have a feeling deep down, you're caught in the middle?
B Side: And, then there is some humor:
Watching:

A great video if you are into flying jets...it will take an hour but amazing explanation of G force, the mechanics of a fighter jet, good warmup for the Top Gun sequel. Link to YouTube video on jet flight

From our library, Wody Allen's newest...

Reading:
Two and a half chapters to go on Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules of Life. It gets better and better.

Thought I would give a novel a try. Last one for me was Where The Crawdads Sing.

Subtitle: Sports or Amazing...Tom Lawless, 1987 What he did: Narrowly avoided extreme humiliation

The success of home clubs in this Series -- the home team won every game -- was in part credited to the Twins' loud fans: This was the first indoor World Series venue, and the Cardinals' team physician, Stan London, gave every player on the team ear plugs. But the loudest moment of the Series might have come in Game 4 in St. Louis, when Tom Lawless -- a 30-year-old utility man with one home run -- hit what The New York Times' Murray Chass called "one of the most unlikely, most improbable, most stunning home runs in World Series history."

Lawless hit a Frank Viola fastball deep to left field, then slowly walked one, two, three, 13 steps down the first-base line while watching it go out. As it cleared the wall, he flung his bat skyward with his left hand, an all-time bat flip that Lawless claimed after the game not to remember doing, and then finally started jogging.

Until Jose Bautista's ALCS flip in 2015, that was probably the most famous bat flip ever, and like Kurosawa films and Mingus recordings, it's still as thrilling and cutting-edge an entire generation later. But the wild thing is:

This link should let you watch the bat flip

It is on YouTube, it will take a few seconds to load and there will be a few seconds ad.

"When he hit it and stood there,'' Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog said, ''I thought it must be in the upper deck. It was about a foot out. I asked him about it later, and he said he hit it as good as he could hit a ball. I said you better run."

Lawless would retire with three career homers, including that one.

Florida:
One day, two parks, walking and takin' photos:
Lakes Park map and four shadows

A rec center and adjoining park:

Just a wonderful local Italian diner if you are down this way

Humor:

Well, this is humor AND Florida!!!!

they gotta keep pushing, changing names and terms...

And then, this amazing funny story...

The Dad never gets in the picture since he is the one behind the camera...

RIP Eddie Haskell

Remember: Last street cars in 1966 in STL. I remember taking the Grand line to Sportsman Park for a double header vs the Giants, Willie Mays, Juan Marichal, Lindy McDaniel, Ray Sadecki, Gaylord Perry, Willie McCovey, Dick Schofield, Orlando Cepeda, Jesus Alou, etc. AND they didn't win their division!

Before my time on campus - 1952 - . but I heard about it when I was there later...

From an earlier blog, some of you asked what happened to the cars in the fire. Almost all but Enterprise (they were hauled up to a yard in Punta Gorda) rentals were acquired by a local scrap yard; almost as many survived as were burned, roughly 3,500 each. About a hundred are being held for the investigation.
Climate change:
Think about this, Columbia MO is about 125 miles from either STL or KC...If Jessie Hall was tall as Mt Everest you could see it

There is an important battle going on now. The Founding Fathers usually got it right...
"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual — or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country." —Samuel Adams (1781)

Old Art: Linda said I should hang this drawing in my studio...Conte crayon 24 x 18"

Still one of my favorites, a friend purchased it, loved it, and it gave me the idea that maybe I could do art and sell some of it. I'll always be grateful. 17 Mile Drive at Pebble Beach, CA.
Acrylic on canvas
Humor:   Oldie but Goodie, I ran this a couple of years ago...

If you listen to only one link today, this parody is great/fun/BeachBoys/coronavirus...the one you want to try.

Listening to:
Los Lobos...their version of Bootleg, "take you a glass of water, make it against the law, see how good the water tastes when you can't have any at all"...a song for our coronavirus?
Burn It Down...My favorite -  link to YouTube video on Jay Leno Show
Tin Can Trust...bluesy instrumental
The Road To Gila Bend "One silver dollar in my hand, road twists and turns is there no end? When I get there I can lay my head, In Gila Bend; Saw a church along the way, A place to hide, to kneel and pray, 'Help me make it maybe one more day' "
How Will The Wolf Survive, La Bamba
Been doing it since 1973 a long time ago.

Another view of Florida...it rained all day and then...

Workout: Checked out the tennis facilities at The Forest CC. The pro played Davis Cup for Zambia. Nice courts, three are lighted, pro shop, facilities, not for me but they have some pickleball courts, ball machine, lessons, etc. Looking forward to it. We'll have our first dinner this week. Linda is looking at a number of clubs in the club and wants to try Bocce Ball.

Baseball:
Yogi and his son Dale:
It struck me as genius, thinking differently than the rest of us. "The pitcher's in trouble."

Coronavirus, lockdown, safety, and liberty in the USA:
Recently Victor Claar a professor of economics at FGCU wrote a piece for USA Today that covered many of the thoughts I've had, and let me say, if you are the one that catches it, all the theory in the world goes out the window.

If you think medical "safety" is the be all of the current discussion you are wrong.
"Lots of things kill Americans. Auto accidents, heart disease and choking are senseless killers." Under current lockdown rules "Calls to mental health hotlines are up 900%," (think about it, 9 times); cases of child sexual abuse are up 22% (unacceptable), etc." Bankruptcies, jobs lost forever, employees returning to only part time positions, etc.

"In a 'good' year, 36,000 Americans die in auto accidents - usually young drivers with lives full of promise. In 2018, more than half of the Americans who died in car accidents were younger than 45." So, if we really want to eliminate every death like we say we do in Covid-19 lockdowns...let your governor mandate that we take away all driver licenses of drivers younger than 45. They are mandating other things, why not this? Let's be safer, all drivers have to wear seat belts, even if you are driving 10mph for 1/2 mile...so lets add helmets for all occupants. MANDATE IT! "You are not capable of making a decision for yourself" your governor might say.

Or, "In 2017, the CDC reported that heart disease was the leading cause of death in the US, taking nearly 650,000 lives.

If the only thing we care about as as social goal is saving lives, then this is an obvious place to start." We could allow your governor to mandate "exercise requirements, thereby putting a dent in annual heart disease fatalities." Think about it...we would have to go to a certified gym or workout center, log in, have trainers monitor and report our progress on weightloss, glucose levels, triglycerides levels, and progress toward improvement, core strength change...all in the interest of saving lives. Big brother would make sure it happens, to you; others (taxpayers, that is you) would pay for it, we'll take it from them in the form of an exercise tax.

"Choking took the lives of 5,000 Americans in 2018, and disproportionately kills older Americans who choke on their food." Again, "If the only thing we care about as a social goal is saving lives...we could mandate that older (is that you?) Americans consume only liquid foods."

Your governor will make those decisions and you will comply, just like staying off beaches, staying out of your synagog, staying out of flower shops (where you would likely be the only person in there, anyway), etc.

But Claude, what about a second wave? Well, remember HIV/AIDs? It has never gone away, has it? So, Covid-19 might never go away, probably never go away. Are you going to stay in your living room, alone, for 20 years? Or maybe change some behavior and take an acceptable risk?

I lost all respect for Lester Holt and Chuck "Sleepy Eye" Todd when they were covering the Republican Convention 3 1/2 years ago. "They don't even know how to hold hands" they said laughing when Trump and Pence walked out together on stage. They went on to make fun of the convention - as a NEWS presentation. So, this lying episode does not surprise  me.

* * * * * * *
Oh, yea, the climate cooled between 1940 and 1975...when our skies were filthy with coal dust, smoke, rivers full of chemicals, landscape littered beyond ugly...IF you are serious about climate change, make the effort to read Fred Singer.

Mothers' Day Edition with new art and fun links.

Enjoy the photos, you should be able to click on to open them up and even pinch open further.

And, I Shut down my website, claudlylesartworks.com for a couple of reasons.
I dropped Instagram. Privacy and waste of time concerns :)

New Art: Here are two I finished today. I have six or seven started, hope to finish most in the next two weeks. Enjoy.
4 x 6" oil on board, Key West Rooster

8 x 10" oil on canvas wrapped board, drive into Garden of The Gods, CO Spgs.
Not Florida: My neighbor moved recently. Gave me his Tiki to protect the front door. I just like the colors and facial expression. I feel like it some days.

Music: I think that one of the best recent recording engineering/production is on the cut Hard Place by H.E.R. While the song is good, lyrics and melody, the mix is outstanding using multi-layers, both H.E.R. and background singers, temp, etc. A YouTube link is below, give it a few minutes to load. An older album/CD that is very well produced is Steely Dan's Aja, by the way. And listen with headphones if you can.

So, I looked up the the producer, it is Rodney Jerkins, whom I was not familiar. What a list of success he has, with all kinds of performers/recording artists. WOW.

To what else am I listening? Older and theatrical but sung beautifully.

Humor:
Having been on both sides of the interview desk, I love this one...

What happened next...Fox News had a lead on an easy salad recipe you could make from your pantry while we are in lockdown with a picture of a salad on a plate. Ok. The next article was discussing a skin formula MM used, but somehow the copy editor let the same lead announce her skin article: Yea, I'll take one of those!

 Saw this on a car window while I was waiting to pick up at the Cancer clinic;

This was an article by a real estate developer and the influence his father had on him AND his banker. I enjoyed the observation...

Oldie but goodie:

Except in our house the husband would be texting the  wife for assistance. JP says' Stand up straight  and speak clearly."

Long Time Ago Chapter:

I peaked early, all downhill since.

Fun Links: If any of these interest you, fun videos and articles. Click on the subject and the real link will appear for you to click on. Sometimes the videos take a few seconds to load, if they are on YouTube here might be a lead ad.

I thought you might be interested in the following link at The Patriot Post: https://patriotpost.us/articles/69419-video-usaf-museum-from-the-air-2020-03-24?mailing_id=4941

Well, ok, not fun but important:

If you could draw a picture and put it into the dictionary under ostentatious, this would be it. Only Rolls Royce, and really from, say 70 years ago only a "today" version.
